Garfield students share their musical talents

Garfield Elementary students shared their growing musical talents at an end of the year concert held May 16 at the Kansas City Public School elementary school.

The students have been taught basic music skills by the Harmony Project KC located nearby at the Northeast Community Center.

This has been a partnership between the LINC Caring Communities initiative at the school and the well-regarded music education program based on a successful model developed in Los Angeles.

Harmony Project KC is a free, research-based youth development and mentoring program for underserved children, using music as the vehicle to keep them safe, in school, and improve academic performance.

The well-attended Garfield concert featured students playing recorders, flutes, clarinets and other musical instruments.

This is the first time Harmony KC has offered its program in a school.

The musical instruction was provided by Gloria Britez-Scolari and Marissa LoNigro of Harmony Project KC.

Danielle Small is the LINC site coordinator. Doug White the school principal.
