Mt. Washington neighbors discuss using former school grounds

The new Mt. Washington senior development project is looking to provide an acre of land for development as a community area for the former school located in northwest Independence.

Local representatives and residents held a dinner November 26 to open community dialog concerning the green space.

Located north of Mt. Washington senior housing development, the green space has been in discussion for the past month.  Several ideas were shared.

Feedback for the green space included creating a shelter and walking path for summer activities, space for outdoor and multicultural performances, and planting trees and flowers.

The area of land, originally Mt. Washington Elementary School, was bought to develop the Mt. Washington Senior Housing Center.

The senior housing project is being developed by Sherman Associates and is an historic rehabilitation of the first elementary school built in Independence.

The former elementary school will be converted into 45-units of affordable senior apartments in addition to ample community room and auditorium space.
